The Cueva de la Rocio is divided into different caves, one designed for restaurant service which has a private salon as well, and the other two caves are designed for the spectator which also have a beautiful exterior and an ample terrace from which one can see the magnificent view of the Alahambra. Each cave is perfectly adapted to the type of activity that takes place, and they all are decorated with the warmth and attention one would find in a family home. Unique and peculiar objects, old photographs, memorabilia of important personalities that have passed through this cave or great artists that once danced on this “tablao”.
The Cueva de la Rocio has a performance every night of traditional “Zambra Gitana”; a singular genre inspired by the ritual gypsy music of the Sacromonte gypsies that represents the different moments of a gypsy wedding. Here it is executed with dignity and rigor by the 10 artists of profound gypsy flamenco tradition (Juan Andrés Amaya, "La repompilla" o Raquel Heredia), and with the distinctive characteristic of being performed on a ground level stage in the center of the rectangular living room space. All the seats are arranged around this space and give the spectator the impression they are inside the performance. Being on the stage, so to speak, the spectator will have no visibility problems from any seating. The caves are well ventilated and prepared against the heat; the lighting is simple and elegantly chosen to highlight the ambience. There is technological and amplification back-up to bring out the best of the cave´s natural acoustics and to soften the dancer´s tap dancing.
The experience is completed by the professionalism of the different services provided. There is a hotel pick up and return service for the hotel guests. Please note that guests from other hotels will be picked up as well to see the performance. To entertain the guests during the trip to the “tablao” there will be excellent and well informed guides that will enrich the journey with bits of history and interesting information about the sites passed on the way to the “tablao”. Information about the artists and the night’s performance will also be shared. These same guides will accompany the visitors on a walking guided tour through Albaicin, the century old district in which the Cueva de la Rocio is embedded. Albaicin was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994.
This business has in its favor the cultural baggage and tradition of one of the most respected families in all of Granada and in the world of flamenco. Founded by D. Andrés Maya Fajardo and Rocío Fernández Bustamante, it is currently directed by their daughter, Dña. Salvaora, and managed by the grandchildren of the same. Alongside the Farruco family, this family is perhaps one of the most important and of most tradition in the world of flamenco. The great Mario Maya and the outstanding guitar player Juan Maya “Marote” are some of the great figures of this family, among others. To this day this family continues bringing forth rising stars and renowned greats to flamenco. The nephew, dancer Juan Andres Maya, carries his name throughout the world with great art and tradition.
