ANTONIO RÍOS FERNÁNDEZ, bailaor. Antonio el Pipa, as he is known artistically, was born in Jerez de la Frontera, in one of the gypsy families of the Barrio de Santiago, with more Flemish roots and tradition: Tía Juana's grandson of Pipa and the nephew of Juana and Antonio The Pipa, of which - in its own right - inherits its artistic name.
Bailaor trained in his own family environment, he became habitual from a very young age in the artistic formations of his native Jerez.
Throughout his long career he has been part of companies like CIA. Manuel Morao or Ballet Cristina Hoyos and along with artists such as Lola Flores, La Tati, José Mercé, Tomatito, Manuela Carrasco or the very Matilde Coral, for which she feels a special admiration. He has shared the stage with personalities such as José Carreras and with formations such as Orquetas de Camara de Sevilla. He has visited theaters such as: New York City Center, Kenedy Center in Washington, Les Champs Elysses in Paris, Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, Grass Opera House, Albeniz Theater in Madrid, La Maestranza Theater in Seville, Palau de la Music of Valencia ...
His montages have been awarded in several occasions like the Pavón Prize of the Circulo de Bellas Artes of Madrid by his show "Vivencias", or the Prize of the Critic to the best spectacle by "Generations", premiered in III Festival of Jeréz. He has the National Prizes of Cordoba (Juana la Macarrona and Paco Laberinto), as well as mentions and distinctions by the specialized critics who have classified him as "worthy successor of figures such as Antonio Gades, Mario Maya or El Güito."
He has participated in events such as: International Festival of Music and Dance in Granada, Biennial of Flamenco Art in Seville, International Congress "Rafael Alberti", Expo'92, Flamenco Festival in Madrid, Flamenco Festival in Alhama, Flamenco Festival in Valencia, Biennial of the danse de Lyon, festival of Jeréz, ...
He has taught courses and seminars around the world, such as the one recently held for the Flamenco Workshop of the Andalusian Dance Center at the invitation of Jose Antonio himself, the one given at the Flamenco Art Foundation Cristine Heeren, or that he teaches every year within the program Of courses at the Festival de Jeréz.
Last season he performed the concert tour of the 1st. Flamenco Andalusian circuit, organized by the Ministry of Culture (Junta de Andalucía), and touring with his company numerous theaters of Andalusian geography.
He has been invited, for the second time, by the World Music Institute of New York to be part of the musical Gyspy Caravan with which he has toured in the USA, Canada and Europe; In this same season has realized tour with Carmen Linares in Middle East, England and Morocco, by invitation of the Instituto Cervantes,
And that has taken him to cities like Cairo, Aman, Damascus, London, Rabat, Casablanca and Tetuan.
His biggest production (25 artists on stage) - Putsals - was premiered at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, in September 2000, within the Flamenco Art Biennial of that city.
His last performance in Madrid took place in the Teatro de la Zarzuela, last March, where he maintained a real hand-in-hand with the bailaora from Granada, the Eva Yerbabuena.
Currently he alternates his professional commitments with the preparation of his next show that will be premiered on February 28, 2002 at the 6th Festival de Jeréz and will receive the title of "De CAI ... El Baile".
Throughout the current season he has already engaged in performances in Spain, France, Germany, Hungary and the United States, and among his most immediate projects is the creation of a Center for Flemish Activities in his native Jerez.
Antonio is considered as faithful and just heir to the purest and authentic gypsy dance, free from artifacts and superfluous adornments and distant, although respectful, of the latest tendencies that in flamenco dance have been operating.
